Looking back and validating what has taken place over the past 4 ½ months brings hope and encouragement for the future. For those with the privilege of having known Laura, without a doubt, we miss her dearly and long for that ray of sunlight to return. We have witnessed many positive signs. Eagerly, we want more and anticipate that reality. Although it feels as if an eternity has passed, on both the brain injury timeframe and on God's timeframe, immense hope exists. Laura has come a long way since her final surgery took place (3 months ago today). The journey has been full of peaks and valleys, but finally is beginning to smooth. Laura has the best environment for healing: a first class nursing facility, intensely loyal supporters, ardent and consistent prayer, and a loving and caring God.
That being said, we move from looking back to looking forward. As we leap into the final month of 2005, it is our blessings that need counting. This month symbolizes a distinct defining point for Laura. It is her favorite month of the year, in which she celebrates her birthday (the 12th), shares the Christmas holiday with the family and friends she adores, and makes plans for the New Year. Laura loves going out of her way and giving generously, simply to create smiles. This will be a tough holiday season indeed. Even though the Laura we know won't be with us this holiday season, we are not without her. Not only is Laura physically alive and still with us, she lives this season in our hearts, minds, and memories. Be encouraged to share these memories of Laura during this season. It is what must be done while we wait for spiritual healing to transform into physical healing. At that point, we will have more than just Laura's return to celebrate, but the complete strengthening of our faith.
It is astonishing to sense the level of safety and protection provided during a period of such uncertainty. One could view Laura as fragile and vulnerable; we view her as strong and safeguarded. One could view Laura's supporters as fearful and worried; we view them as faithful and confident. One could view Him as a deserter and unfair God; we view Him as an omnipotent, omnipresent Lord capable of anything and everything. He is defending, shielding, guarding, providing shelter, and securing Laura's purpose for Him. We are fortunate and blessed to be witnesses!
Have a wonderful weekend!
BUT LET ALL THOSE WHO TAKE REFUGE AND PUT THEIR TRUST IN YOU REJOICE; LET THEM EVER SING AND SHOUT FOR JOY, BECAUSE YOU MAKE A COVERING OVER THEM AND DEFEND THEM; LET THOSE ALSO WHO LOVE YOUR NAME BE JOYFUL IN YOU AND BE IN HIGH SPIRITS (Psalm 5:11)

Laura is battling! Laura is struggling! Laura is fighting! More importantly, our Laura is enduring through the challenge of a lifetime. It is amazing having the opportunity to witness an unbelievable process, an unbelievable woman, and an unbelievable God at work. There is continued progress (what did you expect?) in all areas of Laura's mind and physical body. Visitors marvel at the extent and speed of Laura's increased awareness and improved state. When Laura is being worked with, you can see the struggle by the intensity in her eyes, the look on her face, and how she grinds her teeth. But when the working ceases, her body becomes relaxed. Our once very tense Laura has been transformed by a significant reduction in that stiffness. These are great indicators! All your loving and faithful prayers are creating miracles!
If Laura could speak, she would hug, kiss, and thank each and every one of you. If you have been following her story and these updates, you would know that Laura's goal is to bring people to God and spread his message. We cannot help but believe that this goal is being realized. When Laura is healed and that goal is realized, it will be a privilege to share all of our stories and experiences together. Laura's friends, family, and supporters anxiously await and work towards that future reality.
This journey and struggle has been the test of a lifetime for many. Oftentimes, we question our ability to deal with such a long and enduring test. The daily discipline needed is often overwhelming. That is the exact point where our faith and knowledge of the truth substitutes itself into the game. It is simple to believe, to have faith, to love others, and to be unselfish when the waters are calm. It is only during times of trial and tribulation that we learn about our dependence on Him. The test is not whether we can find our strength to win. The test lies in our ability to believe, trust, and have faith in the Word regardless of present circumstances. Judging from your continued messages and responses, that test is being aced. Blessings will follow!
NO DISCIPLINE SEEMS PLEASANT AT THE TIME. LATER ON, HOWEVER, IT PRODUCES A HARVEST OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PEACE (Hebrews 12:11)

November 25-27, 2005

If you like Laura making progress, you will like this Thanksgiving holiday weekend. On Saturday, Laura lifted her arm and documentation in therapy was made. Overall, she is improved in all areas. Her increased awareness is evident to all. The refocusing of her pupils continues to be impressive. There is marked progress in her head and neck movements, body control, and overall interaction with her surroundings.
We realize that by sharing Laura's incredible story, controversy is a part of the equation. With this under consideration, her story will continue to shed light unto others. The benefits far outweigh any possible drawbacks. Sharing this story allows people wishing to follow her amazing journey just that opportunity. Laura's goals and purpose can be reached by the sharing of faith, hope, and commitment. The combination of Laura's wishes and God's purpose will perpetually guide our actions.
Remember, the existence and truth of God is not a debate to be won. Christianity is a lifestyle, not a religion. Others are convinced of the truth and will commit to this positive change based on your testimony and witness. No words or verbiage can substitute for your personal testimony. You don't have to prove what God has done for you, simply display it for others to see!
BE READY AT ALL TIMES TO ANSWER ANYONE WHO ASKS YOU TO EXPLAIN THE HOPE YOU HAVE IN YOU, BUT DO IT WITH GENTLENESS AND RESPECT. (1 Peter 3:15-16)

November 23-24, 2005

Laura's energy, spirit, and courage keep driving her road to recovery. It has been witnessed on two occasions, by staff and visitors, Laura speaking the word, "No!" Regardless of how faint or purposeful Laura's intent, we can draw strength from her will to overcome this injury. This constant daily battle to regain quality of life is one that not many are faced with. Laura is blessed with the abilities to win this fight.
We would like to thank everyone for making our Thanksgiving holiday more enjoyable. Bringing Laura home was long overdue! It couldn't have come at a better time in her healing process. Laura has always valued friends, family, and holiday celebrations. She is thankful to have spent Thursday morning together and to have such a great deal of loving, caring, and faithful supporters. Laura is glad to have you along for the long haul.
Leo Tolstoy proclaims, "It is by those who have suffered that the world has been advanced." We don't have to know why suffering exists or why suffering is prevalent and extensive in our world. We know that God feels our pain and took on our suffering at Calvary. Many great people and great causes have been born through such suffering. Laura's suffering will prove prosperous for others and the advancement of God's righteous kingdom.
THIS SUFFERING IS ALL PART OF THE WORK GOD HAS GIVEN YOU. CHRIST, WHO SUFFERED FOR YOU, IS YOUR EXAMPLE. FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS. (1 Peter 2:21)

November 21-22, 2005

Laura is looking, feeling, and doing well. She always looks so darn cute. She had her first haircut the other day. It looks great! Laura continues to gain strength in her body, especially with the head and neck control. Some of her biggest gains of late have been increases in facial expressions and improved eye tracking. She loves to track colorful objects. Can't we just see Laura's personality coming to light? Pray for God's slow, but beautiful miracle to continue its work through our special Laura.
Being that I have been appointed to represent Laura's voice and that her voice has not yet returned, I would love to address all of you as Laura. "Hi guys! It's Laura! Boy, how I miss all of you so much. But, get excited! I am coming home for Thanksgiving. You all know how I love hosting a party. The truth is that I've really missed all of you. I value all of our relationships and it kills me not knowing what is going on in your lives. I can't wait to be back with you again. Thanks for loving me! Thanks for supporting me! It keeps me going during all these lonely nights. But thanks mostly for believing in miracles, believing on God, and believing in me. I am struggling a lot and things are really difficult right now. Please, don't ever give up on me. I will not let you down. I love all of you too much and we have so much still to do. Eat some T-Giving turkey for me and I love you. Love always, Laura.
All right, it's Jeff again! Isn't she a sweetheart? We all realize that these are tough times. The amazing part of Laura's story is how during temporary tragic circumstances people love more, bond more, and draw strength from each other. Instead of giving up on Laura, all of you have grown closer to her. The same principle applies to God. Many people want to complain or blame God for their troubles. Good people are not exempt from the dangers of the world. Hold fast to your personal relationship with him. You will be rewarded. For it is through these struggles that true character is founded upon. He shows you the road to victory; it is up to you to choose that path. Leaders are made, not born! Overcoming adversity is a necessary step.

November 18-20, 2005

Unbelievably, Laura posted another fantastic weekend of developments. We are getting littered with comments from visitors as well as the nursing staff about how well she is improving. Unfortunately, Laura still cannot speak to truly communicate with any certainty. However, her overall condition is improving on every level. Laura is gaining more movement throughout her body. The tracking with her eyes is improving significantly. Her neck muscles and consequent head control are increasingly strengthened. It is a slow and grueling process, but necessary. We remain confident regarding the direction and ultimate result of Laura's complete healing.
Laura is apparently very excited to be coming home on Thanksgiving Day. When we explain this to her, she becomes highly reactive and alert. Laura is looking forward to being back in familiar surroundings, wearing her wedding rings, dressed up in a cute outfit, and visiting with family and friends. Many involved in Laura's recovery view this day as an important step for Laura's progression. Those of us that know Laura cannot help but agree!
I came across a great message while reading this morning. Therefore, the words of encouragement will not be from me. This comes from a passage in Joyce Meyer's (a minister from St. Louis) book called Starting Your Day Right Daily Devotions. "You understand how faithful and how good God is when you see His deliverance in your life. You can't get that certainty by reading a book about Him. Your faith increases by going through tough times and seeing His presence make a difference in your life. Don't run away from God during tests and trials; draw near to Him, and listen for His voice of assurance."
It is complete truth! God is giving us the opportunity to develop through Laura's daily struggle in our lives. Take advantage! For you, for her, and for Him!
YES, THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, I WILL FEAR OR DREAD NO EVIL, FOR YOU ARE WITH ME; YOUR ROD AND YOUR STAFF, THEY COMFORT ME (Psalm 23:4)

November 14-15, 2005

We continue to see our miracle at work! Laura is nearing the point in which she is going to burst out of this state. Her eyes are becoming less crossed and are tracking more consistently. Laura is gaining more control over her head and neck movements. We are really working hard with her to strengthen those neck muscles. Her body movements are increasing and are more pronounced. Please, keep in mind that these gains are small. However, they are steps heading in the right direction. Laura needs to crawl before she can walk, and walk before she can run (knowing Laura she may just run first!). Keep the faith and pray adamantly for more positive developments. As many of you know, Wednesday is a big day for Laura. Her story will be receiving media coverage from KMOV Channel 4. They will be conducting interviews and shooting video of our precious Laura. Pray that this event will be a major positive for Laura and her supporters. By praying, we can help ensure that the world will see from Laura, what we have already seen. Laura is present. She is a miracle of God. Her strength is unquestionable. Pray for a great day. As Laura would always say, “GET EXCITED!” We can be confident that God is on our side during these challenging times. We know that he is around us, for us, over us, under us, with us, and in us. Laura knows these truths and is focusing and believing on them for her complete healing. She knows that big things are planned for her life and that temporary setbacks and challenges are necessary to develop her true person. It is awesome knowing that someday soon, Laura will be lifted up for all to see and be a witness. Keep the faith! LITTLE CHILDREN, YOU ARE OF GOD AND HAVE DEFEATED AND OVERCOME THEM, BECAUSE HE WHO LIVES IN YOU IS GREATER THAN HE WHO IS IN THE WORLD (1 John 4:4) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin

November 11-13, 2005

Laura is through another blessed weekend. She appears to be comfortable with her new surroundings after the room change. After speaking with several staff members, the move is a positive change for Laura. It is evident that God has guided us into another solid decision to benefit our girl. She is continuing to do a lot of the same things (eye blinking to command, increasing body movements and overall alertness, becoming more aware and more present, etc.). While these developments certainly are not new, they are steps in the right direction. We all need to stay focused on the long-term direction of Laura’s progress. Up to this point, Laura has given no reason to doubt her in any way. In fact, quite the opposite! She has continued to amaze all of us in many ways. That is why her love is so contagious. Please, stay the course during these difficult times. It can be disheartening when no significant news is taking place on a daily basis. We all want nothing more than to report miraculous news about Laura. When that time comes, you will be inundated with every detail. When that occurs, Laura will lift us all up and provide the encouragement. For now, we are in that role for her. We cannot thank you enough for being involved in Laura’s drive to restoration and healing. God is using her struggle to grow and develop the true character of thousands. Laura wouldn’t want it any other way. She will be excited to hear you share your stories. We continue to be amazed by the devotion and focus provided by all of our family and friends. In a time where it would be easy to give up, quit, or complain; you have chosen the opposite. We are focused on God’s miraculous healing of a special child of his. It is a blessing that a true angel is in our presence. I thank God everyday for having Laura in my life. Are you thankful? FOR THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE ARE NOT PHYSICAL, BUT THEY ARE MIGHTY BEFORE GOD FOR THE OVERTHROW AND DESTRUCTION OF STRONGHOLDS (2 Corinthians 10:4) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin. www.lauralaughlin.com

November 9-10, 2005

Laura is continuing to make progress and has two more great days under her belt. Her physical body is slowly starting to gain ground on her perfectly in tact spirit and soul. It is exciting, but also difficult to wait patiently for this process. Laura’s eye tracking is getting stronger and more consistent. She is really starting to follow people and objects around the room. Her vocalizations continue to get louder and more frequent. It is wonderful to hear her sweet voice after nearly four months. Many of the professionals at the facility are becoming impressed with our Laura. She looks absolutely beautiful and many have commented about how alive and alert she is becoming. We have to believe that God is answering our collective prayers. If you wish to visit Laura, make note that she has changed rooms. She is now in room #40, not #47. This change was necessary due to the disapproval of insurance coverage. Laura has a roommate now. She is a very sweet lady. I have complete faith and trust that all visitors will respect her and her rights. Please, keep in mind that this is her home. Overall, we believe this move will be a positive change for Laura. The staff has agreed and we all feel good about the decision. There are many many things that we have learned throughout this experience. Faith, hope, love, and the power of prayer always come to mind. There are thousands of people involved in Laura’s miraculous journey of recovery. Ultimately, it is a huge responsibility to manage all of Laura’s affairs. Therefore, I have to add another important word; trust. While the responsibility by law rests on my shoulders, the reality is that many carry the burden. I couldn’t do this without the help of the excellent St. John’s staff, Laura’s loyal employer Emerson Electric, and the countless number of friends and family. It is great how we can work together and trust in that power. However, the greatest trust lies in God. While we can manage daily affairs and tasks, he is solely charged with the healing and restoration of Laura. He created her and only he can restore her. We trust in that! We trust in him! Have a great weekend! TRUST IN THE LORD AND DO GOOD; SO SHALL YOU DWELL IN THE LAND AND FEED SURELY ON HIS FAITHFULNESS, AND TRULY YOU SHALL BE FED (Psalm 37:3) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin. www.lauralaughlin.com

November 7-8, 2005

God is really starting to display outwardly what has been going on in the interior for months. Laura is showing encouraging and positive signs. Her overall demeanor and appearance is greatly improved. That fact has been confirmed by practically all of her bedside visitors. Laura has been communicating through the blinking of eyes. She blinks a certain number of times for yes and another number of times for no. We are not fully consistent yet, but close. The therapists have had eventful and hopeful sessions with our miracle. We know that she is waking up. She wants to come home to all of those who have always loved her and for those that have a newfound love for Laura. I, personally, have seen some dramatic changes with Laura. I believe that Laura does a lot of things for me in private that she might not want to do around a group of people or around strangers. She has talked to me on several occasions! When I say talk, it is not what you are thinking. Laura is doing everything to talk (opens her mouth, lips moving, struggling seen on her face), but coherent words are not possible quite yet. She is making a high amount of moans, mumbling, and other sounds. The nurses have even stated to me that her vocalization has increased significantly. It must be incredibly frustrating for such an outgoing and loving woman to not be able to communicate. It is such a great feeling knowing that God is rewarding those of us who have kept and are keeping the faith. We are living based on the spirit (what God says clearly in his Word) and not on the flesh (what doctors or others may physically perceive reality to be). The beauty of living by the spirit is that it is a lifestyle change. It was always there, but many chose not to utilize its power. I was definitely that person. Unfortunately, it took a tragic event like this to see the light of the truth. I used to always think that Jesus Christ and Christianity always had to win a debate and prove that it was real. At the age of 27, I am thankful to have the wisdom to know how false that is. Living by the Spirit changes your life completely for the better. It improves relationships, finances, physical health, mental health, your mind, and more. I know from the letters received that many of you have been changed. My hope is that everyone lives for something more important than themselves. I know that I will never be the same. My dream is to have Laura back to share this incredible faith with. Now, I FULLY understand why she made the ultimatum that to marry her, God had to be the center of our lives. It still is sweetheart! THEREFORE IF ANY PERSON IS IN CHRIST HE IS A NEW CREATION; THE OLD HAS PASSED AWAY. BEHOLD, THE FRESH AND NEW HAS COME! (2 Corinthians 5:17) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin. www.lauralaughlin.com

November 4-6, 2005

Can’t we all sense that this will be a terrific week for Laura? This past weekend went as planned. Laura received a nice balance of rest and stimulation. She is being worked rigorously by staff and family on a daily basis. We are teaming up to maximize Laura’s journey towards a complete recovery. She is really putting in an intense level of effort. Laura is becoming more and more frustrated (believe it or not, this is a good sign!). You can see the anger in her face. It is truly amazing to watch her progress. She is gaining greater control over her eye movements. We are praying for consistent and deliberate movements. Laura just keeps looking fresher and more alive every day. We REALLY REALLY need some good documentation in therapy these next few days for the you-know-who. The power of pray has been Laura’s foundation. Let’s keep making it stronger. Speaking of prayer, let’s really discuss its role in Laura’s miracle story. As previously mentioned several times, there are many powerful forces at play. The doctors, nurses, and therapists have been nothing short of angels at work. The machines and equipment that helped assist Laura were absolutely necessary. The love and support of family and friends was, is, and will continue to be critical. However, there has been one word that summarizes all the days since Laura’s accident. It is the most common word typed to me in emails, the most common word written in cards, and the most common word spoken to me in person. Prayer! The beauty of prayer is that it can be broadcast loudly to thousands or can be spoken under one’s breath in the corner of a room. It is private, but can be shared. It can break down barriers, while building relationships. It can be sung, written, or even spoken. But one thing is certain; it works! If you don’t believe in it, jump on board with Laura and be changed forever. God answers the prayers of his children! LET MY PRAYER BE SET FORTH AS INCENSE BEFORE YOU, THE LIFTING UP OF MY HANDS AS THE EVENING SACRIFICE (Psalm 141:2) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin. www.lauralaughlin.com

November 2-3, 2005

After having a few sluggish days in therapy during the beginning of the week, Laura has had a few great days recently. She is really beginning to impress those working with her and even starting to amaze the doubters. There are many small improvements Laura is making. However, the major gain is that Laura was completely tracking an object with both of her eyes. This is a major event! We take these routine brain functions for granted. This step actually signifies a substantial level of brain activity taking place. Boy, is this a sign of what is to come for Laura? For someone in Laura’s state eye tracking requires a great deal of focus and continual effort. It is awesome how God is rewarding all of us and our persistent faith and prayer. As always, pray for Laura’s physical body to continue the healing process. Ask for God’s favor regarding the insurance companies and other financial issues. Everyone’s efforts will not lack reward. It is on God’s time schedule. I had a chance to do some significant reflection this past evening. I told God that I know that he is taking this tragedy and performing a miracle with Laura. He is using her for his glory. I realized that we could all be used for a mission. In my selfish state, I told God that in my heart and mind, I really want and need her back. The fact is she is being used for a purpose bigger than me, bigger than her friends, bigger than her family, and bigger than all things created by man. I told God explicitly to go ahead and use her, but when you are ready to heal her, don’t make it a minute too late. We will be ready to welcome her home with extreme amounts of love. You see, when Laura is healed our marriage will not be 1(Laura) plus 1(Jeff) equals 2. It will be more like 1 plus 1 equals 0 for God. We are so ready for that day, but for now and as always we wait patiently with faith for your plan to be worked to completion. Have a great weekend and thank you for loving us! I PRAY YOU, IF I HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN YOUR SIGHT, SHOW ME NOW YOUR WAY, THAT I MAY KNOW YOU AND THAT I MAY FIND FAVOR IN YOUR SIGHT. AND CONSIDER THAT THIS NATION IS YOUR PEOPLE (Exodus 33:13) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin. www.lauralaughlin.com

October 31 - November 1, 2005

Laura continues to have positive therapy sessions. She is doing more and more things on command. The ultimate goal is to get Laura healed and back in all of our lives. The intermediate goal is to get her to participate enough that she will qualify for intensive rehab at St. John’s hospital. Let’s all pray specifically for that goal to become real! At that point, she would move over to the 3rd floor of the hospital and begin intensive rehab. Over there, Laura would follow a rigorous 7-8 hour day of participative rehab. All indications are that she is getting closer to that point each day. We are all working Laura really hard to achieve high levels of stimulation. She is reacting more directly, but still tires easily. Personally, we believe she is getting very close to consistent vocalization. We are seeing more moaning and mumbling. These are good signs that more are to come. Laura knows and is consistently told that the choice is hers. She can choose God’s path, work hard, and meet her healing head on. Or she could give up, quit, and lay in a bed indefinitely. We know what she has chosen! Every time we tell her about her choices, she gets this determined look on her face and lifts her head up off the pillow as if to say, “I’ll show you what I’ve chosen!” I was doing some thinking the other day about what makes Laura’s story so compelling. There is the fear and unknown of traumatic brain injuries. Furthermore, there is the undeniable reality of what God can provide to overcome tragedy for his spirit-filled believers. Laura is the x-factor! She is the difference maker. Laura always gives more in all her relationships. Regardless of the compliments that I may receive, we all know that Laura carries our relationship. She is a one-of-a-kind wife. Laura is a friend to many. She always is willing to listen, reach out, and give more of herself. She is a one-of-a-kind friend. Laura is a central figure in both her immediate family and extended family. She is the life of the party and has always loved without needing love in return. She is a one-of-a-kind person. Laura is the ultimate Christian, because when you think of her, you see Christ-like character. Two thousand years ago, they couldn’t keep Christ down! And now, they won’t keep our Laura down. She will live to be a witness, because God has big things planned for this special, one-of-a-kind woman! AN EXCELLENT WIFE, WHO CAN FIND? FOR HER WORTH IS FAR ABOVE JEWELS, THE HEART OF HER HUSBAND TRUSTS IN HER, AND HE WILL HAVE NO LACK OF GAIN (Proverbs 31:10) We love you, Jeff and Laura Laughlin.
